Best of the (Dutch) Fest: European student films as seen on Dutch Festivals in 2010
On February 6th Holland Doc and Breaking Ground presented three films which has been screened at Dutch Festivals: Kathem & Chris, Alberts Vinter and Viva Maria!. At the Netherlands Film Festival, Ruud Lenssen was awarded with the "Dioraphte Stimuleringsprijs" for best Dutch student film in 2010 for his film Kathem & Chris. Last year he graduated the Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam. Kathem & Chris tells the story of friendship between Chris and Kathem, former asylum seeker. Chris helps Kathem with his integration in a small village. During the Go Short Festival in Nijmegen, where Breaking Ground programmes student films in the Breaking Shorts progamme, Andreas Koefoed won the Breaking Shorts Award 2010. He graduated from the National Film School of Denmark with Alberts Vinter (Albert's Winter). His documentary shows the eightyear old Albert, coping with his sick mother and her chemotherapy. He rather doesn't talk about it. Meanwhile, winter is passing and his parents are trying to get him to a choir schole. IDFA also screened a bunch of student films. One of them was Viva Maria! from Agnieszka Smoczynska. She studied at the Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing in Warschau, Poland. With Viva Maria! she follows opera diva Maria Foltyn during rehearsals, where she helps a new generation singers getting ready for opera.
